Brazil posted a trade surplus of USD 2.56 billion in 2013, a sharp fall from the USD 19.4 billion surplus recorded in 2012. For the year, imports rose 6.5 percent to $240 billion, and exports dropped 1 percent to $242 billion.
On the positive side, in December of 2013, Brazil's trade surplus reached USD 2.65 billion, the highest since August of 2012.
Exports rose 5.5 percent on a year to USD 20.5 billion. On a monthly basis, shipments fell slightly by 0.7 percent.
Imports increased 3.9 percent on a year to USD 18.19 billion, but shrank 4.9 percent over the previous month.
