Italy December Inflation Rate Holds Steady at 1-Year Low


The consumer price index in Italy is expected to increase 0.9 percent year-on-year in December of 2017, the same pace as in November. Prices slowed for food, namely unprocessed food and housing while remained stable for transport.

Year-on-year, cost rose less for food and non-alcoholic beverages (1.6 percent vs 1.9 percent in November), namely unprocessed food (2.5 percent vs 3.2 percent) and housing and utilities (1.9 percent vs 2 percent). Meantime, prices advanced at the same pace for: transport (2.7 percent); restaurants and hotels (1.1 percent); miscellaneous goods and services (0.6 percent); health (0.1 percent); recreation and culture (0.5 percent) and alcoholic beverages and tobacco (0.1 percent). Also, cost of education declined 16.2 percent (the same as in November).

Annual core inflation rate, which excludes energy and unprocessed food was 0.4 percent, the same as in November. Excluding only energy, the inflation remained steady at 0.6 percent.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.4 percent, after decreasing 0.2 percent in the previous month.

The harmonized index edged up 0.3 percent on the month (from -0.2 percent in November) and increased 1 percent on the year (from 1.1 percent in November).
