Turkey Unemployment Rate Falls in October

In October of 2013, Turkish jobless rate fell for the first time in four months to 9.7 percent, after rising to 9.9 percent in the previous period. Employment in services and industry increased 0.5 percent and construction rose 0.2 percent, while jobs in agriculture decreased 1.3 percent.

The number of unemployed persons increased by 202 thousand persons in October 2013 and reached 2 million 743 thousand persons. Non-agricultural unemployment rate was 11.9 percent, 0.5 percentage point higher than a year ago and youth unemployment rate was 19.3 percent (1.2 percent higher than last year’s figure).

The number of employed persons increased by 139 thousand compared to the same period last year and reached 25 million 648 thousand persons. Agricultural employment decreased by 294 thousand persons and non-agricultural employment increased by 433 thousand persons. 

Of those who were employed in October, 23.5 percent was employed in agriculture, 19.1 percent was employed in industry, 7.6 percent in construction and 49.8 percent in services. 

The ratio of persons who worked without any social security related to the main job declined to 36.3 percent with 3.4 percentage point decrease.
