The non-agricultural jobless rate went down to 12.3 percent from 14.1 percent a year earlier, while the youth unemployment rate dropped to 19.3 percent from 21.2 percent.
Employment increased by 1.378 million to 28.645 million in October, as the non-agricultural sector added 1.148 million jobs and the farm sector added 229 thousand jobs. Employment went up in services (0.4 percentage points) and was unchanged in construction, while it fell in industry (-0.3 percentage points) and agriculture (-0.1 percentage points). The overall employment rate rose to 47.6 percent from 46.2 percent in Octber 2016.
The labour force went up by 1.018 million to 31.932 million in October, bringing the participation rate to 53.1 percent from 52.4 percent a year ago, while those detached from it rose by 141 thousand to 28.217 million.
On a seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment rate edged down to 10.3 percent from 10.6 percent in the previous month.
