Italy Jobless Rate Unexpectedly Falls to 4-Month Low of 10.3%

Italy’s unemployment rate fell to 10.3 percent in December of 2018 from 10.5 percent in the previous month and below market expectations of 10.6 percent. It was the lowest jobless rate since August of 2018, as the number of unemployed declined by 1.6 percent and employment went up 0.1 percent.

The number of unemployed dropped by 44 thousand from the previous month to 2.691 million in December and the number of employed rose by 23 thousand to 23.261 million, while those detached from the labour force fell by 16 thousand to 13.216 million. 

Youth unemployment rate, measuring job-seekers between 15 and 24 years old, went up to 31.9 percent from an upwardly revised 31.8 percent in November. 

The country's overall employment rate, one of the lowest in the Euro Area, edged up to 58.8 percent in December from an upwardly revised 58.7 percent in the prior month. The labour force participation rate 

In the three months to December, unemployment surged 63 thousand while employment increased slightly by 12 thousand compared with the previous period and those detached from the labour force dropped by 100 thousand. 

On an annual basis, unemployment declined by 137 thousand and employment surged 202 thousand while inactive people decreased by 197 thousand.
