Irish Unemployment Down to 12.3% in January


In January of 2014, Irish jobless rate declined for the eight straight month to 12.3 percent, from 12.4 percent in December last year. A year earlier, unemployment reached 13.8 percent.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the Live Register total recorded a monthly decrease of 2,300 in January 2014, reducing the seasonally adjusted total to 400,700. 

The number of long term claimants on the Live Register in January 2014 was 181,326. The number of male long term claimants decreased by 9,653 (-7.2 percent) in the year to January 2014, while females increased by 1,122 (+2.0 percent), giving an overall annual decrease of 8,531 (-4.5 percent) in the number of long term claimants.

In January 2014, 54.6 percent (218,304) of all claimants on the Live Register were short term claimants.  The comparable figure for January 2013 was 55.8 percent (239,539).
