In January, the number of unemployed increased by 21,000 reaching 592,000 people. In all age groups, unemployment increased. For young people, the proportion of unemployed in January rose to 15 percent. Three months earlier the rate was 13 percent. Among 25 to 45-year olds, unemployment rose further in January to 6.7 percent, while for those in the 45 to 65-year olds to 6.4 percent.
The number of current unemployment benefits rose by 8.6 percent in January 2013. In the northern provinces of Drenthe, Groningen, Friesland and Overijssel, the increase was above average. The number of youth benefits provided and the number of benefits in construction increased compared with December 2012 more than average increases.
In January there were 74,000 new unemployment benefits provided. There were 21,000 benefits terminated due to return to work, which is 47 percent of the total benefits terminated. A year ago it was 51 percent.
