Italy’s Unemployment Rate Up to New Record High


In January of 2014, Italian jobless rate rose to a new record high of 12.9 percent, up from 12.7 percent in the last month of 2013. The January rate is the highest since the data series began in 1977.

The number of unemployed people at 3.29 million showed an increase of 1. 9 percent from the previous month (+60 thousand) and 8.6 percent over a year earlier (+260 thousand).

Youth unemployment rate (aged 15-24) was 42.4 percent, up by 0.7 percentage points compared with the previous month.

In January, 22.259 million persons were employed, unchanged compared with December of 2013. 

The employment rate at 55.3 percent dropped by -0.1 percentage points with respect to December 2013 and the inactivity rate stood at 36.4 percent (-0.1 percentage points in a month).
