Japan Jobless Rate Inches Higher to 2.5% in January

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Japan edged up to 2.5 percent in January 2019 from 2.4 percent in the previous month and slightly above market expectations of 2.4 percent. Meanwhile, the jobs-to-applicants ratio remained unchanged at 1.63 and in line with consensus.

The number of unemployed increased 80 thousand from a month earlier to 1.72 million in January, while employment fell 320 thousand to 66.65 million. The labor force dropped 210 thousand to 68.39 million and those detached from the labor force rose 230 thousand to 42.51 million.

Youth unemployment rate, measuring job-seekers between 15 and 24 years old, inched lower to 3.2 percent in January from 3.3 percent in December.

A year earlier, the unemployment rate was lower at 2.4 percent.
