Italy Jobless Rate Rises to 11.1% in January



Italy's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 11.1 percent in January 2018 from an upwardly revised 10.9 percent in the previous month and above market expectations of 10.8 percent.

The number of unemployed rose by 64 thousand from the previous month to 2.882 million in January. Also, employment grew by 25 thousand to 23.066 million while those detached from the labour force dropped by 83 thousand to 13.335 million.

Youth unemployment rate, measuring job-seekers between 15 and 24 years old, dropped to 31.5 percent, its lowest since December 2011, from a revised 32.8 percent in December.

The country's overall employment rate, one of the lowest in the Euro Area, edged up to 58.1 percent in January from a revised 58 percent in December. The laboour force particpation rate increased to 65.5 percent from 65.3 percent.

In the three months to January, employment levels were almost unchanged compared with the August-to-October period, with temporary employment increasing while permanent contracts were falling.
