Swiss Inflation Rate Unchanged at 11-Month Low

Switzerland's annual inflation rate came in at 0.6 percent in February 2019, unchanged from the previous month's 11-month low and matching market expectations.

Year-on-year, prices rose at slower pace for both transportation (0.7 percent vs 1.3 percent in January) and restaurants and hotels (0.4 percent vs 0.7 percent), while deflation was recorded for health (-0.1 percent vs -0.2 percent) and recreation and culture (-0.2 percent vs unchanged). By contrast, inflation picked up for housing and energy (0.7 percent vs 0.3 percent); food and non-alcoholic beverages (1.5 percent vs 0.8 percent) and miscellaneous goods and services (0.4 percent vs 0.3 percent).

Annual core inflation, which strips out volatile price components like food, beverages, tobacco, seasonal products, energy and fuel, edged down to 0.4 percent in February from 0.5 percent in the prior month.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.4 percent in February, reversing a 0.3 percent drop in January and matching market consensus, mainly due to the increase in air fares as well as prices for international package tours. On the other hand, hotel nights' prices fell.
