Philippines Jobless Rate Rises Slightly in January


Philippines unemployment rate stood at 5.8 percent in January of 2016, down from 6.6 percent a year earlier but slightly up from 5.7 percent reported in October 2015. The figure excludes Lette Region.

In January, there were 2,469 thousand unemployed persons. Among the unemployed persons, 63.4 percent were males. The age group 15 to 24 years comprised 48.2 percent, while the age group 25 to 34 was at 30.9 percent. By educational attainment, 19.7 percent of the unemployed were college graduates, 14.5 percent were college undergraduates, and 45.4 percent were high school graduates.

The number of underemployed was 7,879 persons. More than 51.4 percent worked for less than 40 hours a week. 37.2 percent of underemployed worked in the agriculture sector, while 44.8 percent were in the services sector. Those in the industry sector accounted for 18.0 percent. 

There were 40,047 thousand employed persons. 56.3 percent worked in the services sector, 27.0 percent in agriculture and the remaining 16.7 percent in the industry sector . 

The labour force participation rate came in at 63.4 percent, as compared to 63.7 percent a year ago.
