Dutch Unemployment Rate Rises Further in February


Netherlands' jobless rate increased to a fresh record high 8.8 percent in February of 2014. The number of unemployed persons edged up by 13 thousand to 691 thousand.

The number of people claiming unemployment benefits in February of 2014 amounted to 460 thousand, (up by 0.1 percent over January and 22 percent higher than a year earlier). The largest increase occurred in the transport and storage and care and welfare sectors.

In February, 48 thousand new unemployment benefits were provided and 48 thousand benefits were terminated (22 thousand benefits terminated due to return to work). 

In the second month of 2014, there were almost as many youth unemployed as there was three months ago. Yet, more unemployment benefits were provided for the elderly, while those provided to the youth declined.
