Brazil Unemployment Rate Above Forecasts at 12.6%



The jobless rate in Brazil increased to 12.6 percent in the three months to February 2018, above 12 percent in the September-November 2017 period and market expectations of 12.5 percent.

The number of unemployed increased by 550 thousand from the three months to November to 13.121 million while employment fell by 858 thousand to 91.091 million. The number of people in the labour force went down by 307 thousand to 104.212 million and the number of those detached from the labour force went up by 536 thousand to 64.937 million. 

Compared with the same period of the previous year, the number of unemployed fell by 426 thousand from 13.547 million, while employment grew by 1.745 million from 89.346 million.

The average real income was recorded at BRL 2,186 in the three months to February, barely unchanged from the September-November 2017 period's BRL 2,165 and compared to BRL 2,148 in the same period of last year.
