Italy Jobless Rate Rises to 11.7% in February


The seasonally adjusted jobless rate in Italy edged up to 11.7 percent in February of 2016 compared to an upwardly revised 11.6 percent in the previous month while staying above market expectations of 11.5 percent. On a monthly basis, 97 thousand jobs were lost in February, outweighing a rise of 73 thousand in January.

In January, the number of unemployed persons rose by 7 thousand or by 0.3 percent to 2.980 million from 2.973 million in January. While the number of employed persons fell by 97 thousand or by 0.4 percent to 22.456 million from 22.553 million in the previous month. Employment rate, one of the lowest in the Euro Area, fell to 56.4 percent from a downwardly revised 56.6 percent in January. 

Youth unemployment rate (aged 15-24) went down to 39.1 percent from 39.3 percent the month before, but remained above the levels posted at the end of 2015.

Year-on-year, the number of unemployed fell by 136 thousand or by 4.4 percent while the the number of employed increased by 96 thousand or by 0.4 percent.
