Italy Jobless Rate Lowest Since December 2012


Italy's seasonally adjusted jobless rate fell to 11.4 percent in March 2016 compared with a downwardly revised 11.6 percent in the previous month, beating market expectations of 11.7 percent. It was the lowest reading since December of 2012, as the number of unemployed persons fell 2.1 percent from the month before while employment rose 0.4 percent.

In March, the number of unemployed persons fell by 63 thousand or by 2.1 percent to 2.895 million from 2.958 million in February, while the number of employed persons rose by 90 thousand or by 0.4 percent to 22.578 million from 22.488 million in the previous month. Employment rate, one of the lowest in the Euro Area, went up to 56.7 percent from 56.5 percent in February. 

Youth unemployment rate (aged 15-24) went down to 36.7 percent, its lowest level since October 2012, from 38.2 percent the month before.

Year-on-year, the number of unemployed fell by 274 thousand or by 8.6 percent while the the number of employed increased by 263 thousand or by 1.2 percent.
