Russia Inflation Rate Accelerates in April


Russian consumer prices increased 7.3 percent in April from 6.9 percent in March, driven by higher food, electricity and gas prices.

Year-on-year, prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco recorded the highest increase (14.4 percent), due to a 28.5 percent rise in tobacco cost.

Food prices edged up 8.7 percent, compared with 7.9 percent in March. Cost of butter increased 24.3 percent; milk went up 19.1 percent; sugar 14 percent; fruit and vegetables 14.4 percent and fish 11.4 percent. 

Prices of housing, water, electricity and gas rose 8.6 percent, the same annual rate recorded in March.

From March to April, consumer prices rose 0.9 percent, slower than a 1 percent increase in the previous period. Food cost decelerated to 1.3 percent, while prices of services rose at a fastest 0.7 percent.

Core inflation rate accelerated to 6.5 percent year-on-year in April from 6 percent in March.
