Portugal Unemployment Rate Rises in Q1


Portuguese jobless rate grew to 13.7 percent in the first quarter of 2015 from 13.5 percent reported in the previous period as the number of unemployed increased 2.1 percent and employed fell 0.3 percent. It is the second consecutive quarterly increase.

In the first quarter of 2015, there were 712.9 thousand unemployed people. On a quarterly basis, unemployment affected mainly: women (+5.0 percent); people aged 45 and over (+3.6 percent); having completed the first or second stages of basic education (+2.7 percent); seeking a new job (+3.2 percent), who were formerly in the services sector (+5.2 percent); and long term unemployment (+2.2 percent). Youth unemployment rate rose to 34.4 percent from 34.0 percent in the previous three months.

Meanwhile, employment fell 0.3 percent to 4,477.1 thousand, from the previous quarter, affecting mostly: men (-0.4 percent); people aged from 35 to 44 (-0.7 percent); having completed the first and second stages of basic education (-0.4 percent); employed in the services sector (-0.6 percent); and working  full-time (-0.4 percent). 

The participation rate stood at 58.5 percent, the same as in Q4 of 2014, and down 0.5 percent from the same quarter of last year.

Year-on-year, unemployment rate decreased 1.4 percent, as the number of unemployed went down by 9.5 percent and employed people rose 1.1 percent.
