Compared with the three months ended in January of 2019, the number of unemployed increased by 552 thousand to 13.177 million.
Employment went up by 74 thousand to 92.365 million, with most of job gains occurring in industry (+170 thousand);information and communication activities, finance, real estate, professional and administrative activities (+122 thousand); transportation, warehousing and mail (+92 thousand); public administration, defense, social security and education (+92 thousand); and other services (+38 thousand). Meanwhile, job losses were recorded in trade (-186 thousand); construction (-173 thousand); agriculture, livestock, forestry, fishery and aquaculture (-31 thousand); and hotels and restaurants (-19 thousand).
The number of people in the labour force went up by 627 thousand to 105.543 million and those detached from the labour force fell by 326 thousand to 64.951 million.
Compared with the same period of 2018, the number of unemployed declined by 183 thousand from 13.361 million, while employment advanced by 1,937 thousand from 90.429 million.
The average real income was estimated at BRL 2,295 in the three months to April, compared to BRL 2,2304 in the three months to January and to BRL 2,281 a year earlier.
