Japan Jobless Rate Steady for 3rd Month at 3.2%

The seasonally adjusted jobless rate in Japan was recorded at 3.2 percent in May of 2016, unchanged from the previous two months and in line with market expectations. The jobs-to-applicants ratio stood at 1.36 in May, compared to 1.34 percent in April while market expected 1.35 percent.

A year earlier, the unemployment rate came in at 3.3 percent.

In May 2016, the number of unemployed persons were 2.16 million, a decrease of 80 thousand (-3.6 percent) from a year earlier. The number of employed persons were 64.46 million, an increase of 460 thousand (+0.7 percent) from the previous year.

The labour force  rate grew 0.6 percent from a year earlier to 66.62 million and population aged 15 and over was flat at 110.76 million.

The labour force participation rate increased by 0.3 percentage points to 60.1 percent from 59.8 percent in May 2015.
