Italian Unemployment Rate Rises To 11.3% In May


Italy's seasonally adjusted jobless rate edged up to 11.3 percent in May 2017 from the revised April's figure of 11.2 percent and above market expectations of 11.1 percent. The number of unemployed persons rose by 44 thousand from the previous month while employment decreased by 51 thousand.

There were 2.927 million unemployed people, 44 thousand more than in the previous month. Meanwhile, employment declined by 51 thousand to 22.923 million and those detached from the labour force were unchanged at 13.492 million.

Youth unemployment rate, measuring job-seekers between 15 and 24 years old, rose for the second consecutive month to 37 percent from an upwardly revised 35.2 percent in April.

Italy's overall employment rate, one of the lowest in the Euro Area, fell to 57.7 percent in May from 57.8 percent in April.
