Turkish Unemployment Down to 9-Month Low

Turkey’s jobless rate decreased for the second straight month to 9 percent in April of 2014 from 9.7 percent in the previous month. It is the lowest rate since July of 2013.

The number of employed persons amounted to 26 million 194 thousand in April and the employment rate reached 46.1 percent. 5 million 578 thousand persons were employed in agriculture and 20 million 616 thousand persons worked in the non-agricultural sector. Of those who were employed in April, 21.3 percent worked in agriculture; 20.5 percent was employed in industry; 7.3 percent in construction and 50.9 percent in services.

The ratio of persons who worked without any social security related to the main job was recorded at 34.8 percent in April: 81.2 percent in agriculture sector and 22.3 percent in the non-agriculture sector.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, employment increased by 2 thousand persons in April compared to the previous period. The number of unemployed persons increased by 11 thousand persons. While youth unemployment rate including 15-24 age group realized as 15.5 percent, unemployment rate for 15-64 age group was recorded at 9.1 percent.
