Italy Unemployment Rate Edges Up to 11.6%


The unemployment rate in Italy increased slightly to 11.6 percent in June of 2016 from 11.5 percent in the previous month as more people joined the labour force.

The number of unemployed people increased 0.9 percent to 2.98 million and those detached from the labour force fell 0.4 percent to 13.6 million. Employment rose at a slower 0.3 percent to reach 22.78 million, following increases in the previous months (0.3 percent in both March and April and 0.1 percent in May). As a result, the employment rate edged up by 0.1 percent to 57.3 percent, the highest in nearly six years.  

Youth unemployment rate fell slightly to 36.5 percent from 36.8 percent in May, reaching a near four-year low.

Considering the second quarter of the year, employment rose more than unemployment (0.6 percent and 0.2 percent respectively) while the inactivity rate fell 1.3 percent.
