The number of unemployed persons amounted to 3.89 million, a decrease of 1.0 percent compared to the previous month (-31 thousand) but an increase of 11.0 percent on an annual basis (+307 thousand). Among 15-24 year olds, 642 thousand persons, representing 10.7 percent of the population in this age group, were looking for jobs. Youth joblessness is up by 4.6 percentage points when compared with June of 2012.
In June, the employment rate was slightly down to 55.8 percent, the lowest figure registered since the third quarter of 2000, compared with a revised 55.9 percent the previous month. The inactivity rate stood at 36.4 percent, an increase of 0.1 percentage points on a monthly basis and 0.2 percentage points year-on-year.
