Turkish Inflation Rate Down to 8.2% in August

In August, Turkey's consumer price index rose by 8.2 percent, down from 8.9 percent a month earlier. A slowdown in the rise of clothing and food prices was able to offset rising imports costs driven by a weakening lira.

The highest annual increase was 16.0 percent in alcoholic beverages and tobacco. Food and non-alcoholic beverages (10.3 percent), hotels, cafes and restaurants (9.1 percent), transportation (8.8 percent), housing (7.5 percent) were the other main groups where high increases were registered.

In August 2013, within the average prices of 437 items in the index, prices of 72 items remained unchanged while average prices of 243 items increased while those of 122 items decreased.

Compared to the previous month, prices fell by 0.10 percent. Compared to December of the previous year the inflation rate stood at 4.21 percent and on the twelve months moving average basis by 7.42 percent.
