Swiss Inflation Rate Accelerates in August


The annual inflation rate in Switzerland accelerated to 0.1 percent in August of 2014 from 0.0 percent in the previous month. Consumer prices were flat on a monthly basis, as cost of most goods and services were up except for alcoholic beverages and tobacco, communication, health and clothing and footwear.

Year-on-year, upward pressures were registered for education prices (2.0 percent), food (1.4 percent), restaurants and hotels (0.7 percent), recreation and culture (0.6 percent) and alcoholic drinks and tobacco (0.6 percent). In contrast, communication cost fell 2.9 percent, health prices dropped 1.2 percent and transport cost declined 1 percent. 

On a monthly basis, consumer prices were unchanged from the previous month. Price pressures were seen for cost of rents (+0.6 percent), housing and energy (+0.4 percent), restaurant and hotels (+0.2 percent) and other goods and services (+0.2 percent). Prices were lower for alcoholic beverages and tobacco (-0.5 percent), recreation and culture (-0.5 percent), health care (-0.4 percent) and traffic (-0.4 percent).
