Italy August Inflation Rate Revised Slightly Lower

The annual inflation rate in Italy was revised lower to 0.4 percent in August 2019, compared to a preliminary estimate of 0.5 percent and unchanged from the previous month. That was the lowest inflation rate since November 2016, amid a slowdown in cost of transport.

Prices rose at a softer pace for both transport (0.6 percent vs 0.8 percent in July) and restaurants and hotels (1 percent vs 1.1 percent). In addition, housing and utilities deflation was unchanged at 0.3 percent while recreation and culture prices were flat (vs -0.1 percent in July).

Meanwhile, inflation picked up for food and non-alcoholic beverages (0.9 percent vs 0.8 percent), miscellaneous goods and services (1.5 percent vs 1.4 percent), health (0.6 percent vs 0.5 percent), clothing and footwear (0.3 percent vs 0.2 percent), and furnishing and household equipment (0.1 percent vs flat reading).

Annual core inflation rate, which excludes energy and unprocessed food, was unchanged at 0.5 percent in August. Excluding only energy, inflation held steady at 0.6 percent.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased 0.4 percent, the same pace as in July and also below the flash estimate of 0.5 percent.

The harmonized index of consumer prices rose 0.5 percent from the previous year (vs 0.3 percent in July); and was flat month-over-month (vs -1.8 percent in July).
