Dutch Unemployment Slightly Down in August

In August, Netherlands' unemployment rate fell for the first time in 16 months. The rate was registered at 8.6 percent, down from 8.7 in July. In August of 2012 the jobless rate was 6.5 percent.

The number of unemployed decreased by 11 thousand over the previous month and reached 683 thousand persons. Compared with January of this year, there were over 170 thousand more unemployed. In the past three months, there were average increases of 8 thousand unemployed per month.

The decrease in unemployment was almost exclusively registered in age group of 15 to 24 years-old. Unemployment was down 9 thousand persons under this age group decreasing by 1 thousand among 25-45 years-old and over-45 years-old.

Unemployment benefits were up 1 percent compared to July and 31 percent from a year ago reaching 399 thousand. In August, 54 thousand new benefits were provided and 50 thousand were terminated, most due to return to work.
