Italian Inflation Rate Slows to 0.9% in September

In September, Italy's annual inflation rate fell 0.3 percentage points to 0.9 percent. The slowdown was mainly due to lower increases in prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages and falling transport costs.

Concerning Food and non-alcoholic beverages, the slowdown was due to the large decrease of prices of fresh fruit (-4.6 percent compared with the previous month and +5.4 percent with respect to September 2012, down from +9.9 percent observed in the previous month).

With regard to Transport, the main causes were the large decreases of prices of passenger transport by air and of passenger transport by sea and inland waterway. In the same division, prices of Fuels and lubricants increased by 1.1 percent on monthly basis; nevertheless, the annual rate of change was negative (-4.4 percent), owing to the comparison with September 2012, when the monthly rate of change was higher (+3.7 percent).
