Italy Jobless Rate Drops to Lowest Since 2011

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Italy fell to 9.5 percent in August of 2019 from a downwardly revised 9.8 percent in the previous month and below market expectations of 9.9 percent. It was the lowest jobless rate since November of 2011.

The number of unemployment declined by 87 thousand, or 3.4 percent from the previous month to 2.452 million in August and those detached from the labour force went up 73 thousand, or 0.6 percent to 13.246 million, while employed were barely unchanged at 23.400 million. 

Youth unemployment rate, measuring job-seekers between 15 and 24 years old, dropped 1.3 percent to 27.1 percent. 

The country's overall employment rate, one of the lowest in the Euro Area, was unchanged at 59.2 percent in August. The labour force participation rate rose to 65.8 percent, the highest since June 2018, from 65.7 percent in the previous month. 

On an annual basis, unemployment declined by 186 thousand and employment increased by 140 thousand.
