Dutch Unemployment Unchanged at 8.6% in September

In September, Netherlands' unemployment rate was unchanged at 8.6 percent, just 0.1 percentage points below its historical high. In September of 2012 the jobless rate was 6.6 percent.

The number of unemployed increased by 2 thousand over the previous month and reached 685 thousand persons. Compared with January of this year, there were over 93 thousand more unemployed. In the past three months, there were average increases of 3 thousand unemployed per month.

Unemployment decreased in construction (-3.6 percent), education (-1.2 percent) and in financial and business services (-0.7 percent). The biggest increases in unemployment benefits were registered in the energy sector (+5.2 percent) and agriculture (2.8 percent).

Unemployment benefits were unchanged compared to August and up by 100 thousand comparing with the same month a year earlier. In September, 45 thousand new benefits were provided and 44 thousand were terminated, most due to return to work.
