Compared with August 2013, the number of unemployed amounted to 2.20 million, 30,000 persons or 1.4 percent more than a year earlier. When adjusted for seasonal and irregular effects, the number of unemployed amounted to 2.24 million. The adjusted unemployment rate was 5.2 percent.
A total of 42.1 million persons resident in Germany were in employment, for the first time since the German reunification the 42 million mark was passed. Compared with September 2012, the number of persons in employment was up by 250,000 or 0.6 percent.
The number of persons in employment rose by 201,000 or 0.5 percent in September 2013 compared with the previous month. The average increase over the last five years was 260,000, which was higher than this year. After seasonal adjustment, that is, after the elimination of the usual seasonal fluctuations, the number of persons in employment rose slightly by 2,000 in September 2013 compared with August 2013.
