Japan Jobless Rate Rises to 2.4%

The unemployment rate in Japan climbed to 2.4 percent in September 2019, rebounding from near 30-year lows and topping market expectations of 2.3 percent. The jobs-to-applications ratio fell to 1.57, the lowest since November 2017 and below market expectations of 1.59.

The number of unemployed increased 130 thousand from the previous month to 1.67 million in September, while employment fell 50 thousand to 67.30 million. The labor force rose 80 thousand to 68.97 million and those detached from the labor force declined 170 thousand to 41.80 million. 

The non-seasonally adjusted labor force participation rate currently stands at 62.5 percent, compared to 61.9 percent in September 2018.


A year earlier, the unemployment rate was also at 2.4 percent.
