The non-agricultural jobless rate edged down to 12.8 percent from 13.7 percent, while the youth unemployment rate rose to 20.6 percent from 19.9 percent in August 2016.
Employment increased by 1.355 million to 28.828 million in August, as the non-agricultural sector added 1.163 thousand jobs and the farm sector added 193 thousand jobs. Employment increased in construction (0.5 percentage points) but fell in industry (-0.2 percentage points) and agriculture (-0.3 percentage points) while services were unchanged. The overall employment rate rose to 48 percent from 46.7 percent in August 2016.
The labour force went up by 1.266 million to 32.233 million, bringing the participation rate to 53.7 percent from 52.6 percent a year ago, while those detached from it declined by 99 thousand to 27.769 million.
On a seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment rate edged down to 10.8 percent from 11.1 percent in the previous month.
