Consumer prices in Malaysia rose 2.6 percent year-on-year in November of 2015, as compared to a 2.5 percent increase in October and above market consensus of 2.3 percent. Prices of food and housing & utilities increased less than a month earlier while cost of transport fell at a slower pace.
Year-on-year, prices increased for: alcoholic beverages & tobacco (+20.7 percent in November from +13.3 percent in October); communication (+3.4 percent from +3.3 percent); recreation services & culture (+2.6 percent from +2.4 percent) and miscellaneous goods & services (+5.9 percent from +5.8 percent). In contrast, cost declined for transport (-5.2 percent from -5.7 percent). Cost moderated for: food & non-alcoholic beverages (+4.1 percent from +4.7 percent); clothing & footwear (+0.6 percent from +0.7 percent); housing, water, electricity, gas & other fuels (+2.5 percent from +2.7 percent); health (+4.4 percent from +4.7 percent) and restaurants & hotels (+4.6 percent from +4.7 percent). Prices remained steady for: furnishing, household equipment & routine maintenance (+3.8 percent) and education (+2.5 percent).
Among food & non-alcoholic beverages, customers had to pay more for: food (+4.2 percent in November from +4.7 percent in the preceding month); food at home (+4.1 percent from +4.9 percent); rice, bread & other cereals (+1.8 percent from +1.8 percent); meat (+0.7 percent from +2.4 percent); fish & seafood (+6.6 percent from +6.1 percent), milk & eggs (+2.0 percent from +4.1 percent), oils & fats (+0.8 percent from +0.8 percent), fruits (+5.9 percent from +5.9 percent), vegetables (+8.9 percent from +12.7 percent); sugar, jam, honey, chocolate & confectionary (+1.9 percent from +2.0 percent) and coffee, tea, cocoa & non-alcoholic beverages (+3.3 percent from +3.1 percent). Prices remained steady for: fruits (+5.9 percent) and food products (+5.7 percent).
On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.6 percent in November, accelerating from a 0.4 percent rise in the preceding month. Upward prices pressure was seen for: alcoholic beverages & tobacco (+17.5 percent); housing, water, electricity, gas & other fuels (+0.5 percent); furnishing, household equipment & routine maintenance (+0.2 percent); health (+0.1 percent); transport (+0.4 percent); recreation services & culture (+0.2 percent); education (+0.1 percent) and miscellaneous goods & services (+0.3 percent). Prices remained unchanged for: clothing & footwear and communication.
Considering the first eleven months of 2015, consumer prices rose 2.0 percent.
