Meanwhile, inflation was steady for miscellaneous goods & services (at 1.7%) while it slowed for education (2.9% vs 3.4%); alcoholic drinks and tobacco (1.6% vs 1.9%) and furnishings (0.5% vs 1.4%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.9 percent, after being flat in the previous month.

The Unicredit Bank Austria Manufacturing PMI edged down to 50.0 in March of 2019 from 51.8 in the previous month, signalling no change in the health of the Austrian manufacturing sector. Output growth was the slowest in over three-and half years and new orders shrank at the fastest pace since November 2014. In addition, the decline in export orders was the steepest in almost six-and-a-half-years, linked to uncertainty both political and in relation to the car industry. Meantime, the rate of job creation slowed as backlogs of work fell for the second straight month. Also, purchasing activity fell for the first time in over three years. On the price front, input inflation slowed further to the weakest in almost two-and-a-half-years; output charge inflation stood at a 26-month low. Looking ahead, business confidence was slightly stronger than in the previous survey period but still among the lowest seen over the past four years.

On the other hand, fixed investment slowed (0.4 percent from 0.7 percent). Meanwhile, net trade contributed positively to growth, as exports climbed 0.7 percent (from 0.8 percent in Q3) and imports increased at a softer 0.6 percent (the same as in Q3). Year-on-year, the economy grew 2.4 percent, slightly higher than preliminary estimates of 2.3 percent and compared with a 2.2 percent expansion in Q3. Considering 2018, the economy expanded 2.7 percent, higher than a 2.6 percent gain in 2017.
