Brazil's nominal budget deficit widened to BRL 86.9 billion in July 2020 from BRL 30.3 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year, compared with market expectations of a BRL 109.9 billion shortfall. The central government shortfall went up to BRL 91.0 billion from BRL 24.1 billion a year earlier. On the other hand, the regional government budget shifted to a BRL 3.6 billion surplus from BRL 6.3 billion gap in July 2019 and the state-owned enterprises surplus advanced to BRL 0.47 billion from BRL 0.13 billion. The primary budget recorded a deficit of BRL 81.07 billion compared to a BRL 2.76 billion gap a year earlier.

Brazil Posts Largest Budget Deficit on Record
Brazil's nominal budget deficit widened sharply to BRL 210.1 billion in June 2020 from BRL 30.1 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year, well above market expectations of a BRL 164.1 billion gap. It is the largest nominal budget shortfall ever, as the central government deficit increased to BRL 213.0 billion from BRL 24.9 billion a year earlier. Also, the regional government budget shifted to a BRL 2.6 billion surplus from BRL 4.1 billion gap in June 2019 and the state-owned enterprises reported a BRL 0.25 billion surplus compared to a BRL 0.1 billion shortfall. The primary budget recorded a deficit of BRL 188.7 billion compared to a BRL 12.7 billion gap a year earlier.

Brazil's nominal budget deficit widened to BRL 140.4 billion in May of 2020 from BRL 47.6 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year and compared with market expectations of a BRL 158.2 billion shortfall. It is the largest nominal budget gap ever, as the central government deficit widened sharply to BRL 132.8 billion from BRL 43.2 billion; and the regional governments gap went up to BRL 7.6 billion from BRL 2.9 billion.
