The Dominican Republic's economy advanced 3.7 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2019, slowing from a 5.7 percent expansion in the previous period. It was the weakest growth rate since the third quarter of 2017, as household consumption (3.8 percent from 4.6 percent in Q1), government spending (2.9 percent from 5.1 percent) and gross fixed capital formation (5 percent from 9.1 percent) eased. Net trade contributed negatively to the GDP, as imports increased 6 percent (vs 6.8 percent in Q1) and exports rose at a softer 2 percent (vs 5 percent in Q1).

Dominican Republic Interest Rate at 4.50 percent  
The Central Bank of Dominican Republic left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 4.50 percent at its September meeting. The move follows a 25bps slash in the previous meeting and leaves the rate at its lowest level since 2013. Policymakers said that the decision is based on the risk balance regarding inflation outlook, international and domestic macroeconomic indicators, market expectations and medium-term projections. The Committee noted that the annual inflation rate rose to 1.7% in August from 1.4 percent in July boosted by cost of food & non-alcoholic beverages, still well below the target range (4% +/- 1%) and it is expected to remain around the lower range by the end of 2019. The Committee reaffirmed its commitment to drive monetary policy towards the achievement of its inflation target and the proper functioning of the financial and payment systems and will continue to monitor global economic developments and its impact on aggregate demand.

The annual inflation rate in Dominican Republic rose to 1.72 percent in August 2019 from 1.4 percent in July. It was the highest inflation rate since November last year, as prices went up further for food & non-alcoholic beverages (5.3 percent vs 3.9 percent in July); miscellaneous goods & services (3 percent vs 2.9 percent); furnishings & household equipment (2.1 percent vs 1.9 percent); health (3.4 percent vs 3.2 percent); and alcoholic beverages & tobacco (5.3 percent vs 3.9 percent). In addition, cost of clothing & footwear dropped less (-3.3 percent vs -3.4 percent). On the other hand, prices eased for restaurants & hotels (1.8 percent vs 1.9 percent); and education (4 percent vs 4.4 percent). Also, cost fell at a faster pace for housing & utilities (-4.5 percent vs -4.2 percent); transport (-0.5 percent vs -0.4 percent); and recreation & culture (-0.8 percent vs -0.2 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased 0.3 percent, easing from a 0.5 percent gain in July.
