Finland’s current account deficit surged to EUR 4.24 billion in April 2019 from EUR 0.83 billion in the corresponding month a year earlier. This was the largest current account gap on record, as the primary income deficit soared to EUR 3.70 billion from EUR 0.94 billion a year ago. Also, the goods account posted a shortfall of EUR 0.19 billion, swinging from a surplus of EUR 0.57 billion the preceding year. Meantime, the deficit of secondary income narrowed to EUR 0.11 billion from EUR 0.20 billion while the gap of.services account was little-changed at EUR 0.25 billion.

Finland's annual inflation rate fell to 1.2 percent in May 2019 from 1.5 percent in the previous month. Inflation slowed for: housing & utilities (2.2 pct vs 2.4 pct in April); food and non-alcoholic beverages (0.5 pct vs 2 pct), and transport (1.4 pct vs 2.6 pct). Meanwhile, inflation was steady for: health (at 0.9 pct); education (at 1.2 pct), and alcoholic beverages & tobacco (at 3.3 pct). On the other hand, prices rose faster for restaurants & hotels (2.9 pct vs 2.7 pct); miscellaneous goods & services (1.2 pct vs 1.1 pct) while prices rebounded for communication (0.5 pct vs -0.5 pct). By contrast, cost dropped for: clothing & footwear (-1.0 percent vs -1.6 percent); furnishings & household equipment (-0.2 pct vs 0.5 pct), and recreation & culture (-0.8 pct vs -1.2 pct). On a monthly basis, consumer prices declined by 0.2 percent in May, following a 0.6 percent rise in April.

Industrial production in Finland jumped by 6.5 percent year-on-year in April 2019, reversing a downwardly revised 1.0 percent fall in the previous month. That was the steepest increase in output since March 2018, as manufacturing activity rebounded sharply (6.4 percent vs -0.1 percent in March), mainly driven by chemicals (8.8 percent vs 2 percent); electrical and electronics (11.7 percent vs 3.9 percent), machinery and equipment (6.9 percent vs 2.9 percent); fabricated metal products (17.7 percent vs 7.1 percent); and food products (4.6 percent vs -4.1 percent). Also, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply rebounded (3.6 percent vs -7.6 percent) and mining and quarrying growth accelerated (14.8 percent vs 8.9 percent). On a monthly basis, industrial production rose 2.2 percent in April, following a revised 0.2 percent gain in March.

The Finnish gross domestic product grew 0.2 percent on quarter in the three months to March of 2019, compared to a downwardly revised 0.5 percent expansion in the previous period, and lower than a preliminary estimate of 0.6 percent advance, final figures showed. It was the weakest growth rate since the June quarter of 2018, mainly due to a decline in private consumption (-1.2 percent from 0.7 percent) and fixed investment (-0.3 percent from 1.7 percent). On the other hand, government spending rebounded sharply (2.7 percent from -0.3 percent) and net external demand contributed positively to GDP growth, as exports rose 3 percent (vs 3.3 pct in Q4) while imports dropped 5.7 percent (vs 3.8 pct in Q4). On a yearly basis, the economy advanced 1.2 percent, following a 2.2 percent growth in the fourth quarter.

It was the lowest producer inflation since November 2016, as export products rose softer (1.2 percent vs 1.8 percent in March) while manufactured products sold on the domestic market prices was unchanged (at 2.7 percent).
