Kyrgyzstan GDP Shrinks 6.1% YoY in January-July
Kyrgyzstan's economy shrank 6.1 percent year-on-year in January-July of 2020, after growing 6.4 percent in the same period a year earlier. It was the sharpest contraction in four years, as the coronavirus pandemic hit the economy. The services sector was the most affected, shrinking by 9.6 percent, in particular hotels & restaurants (-46.9 percent), transportation activities (-34.9 percent) and wholesale & retail trade (-17.1 percent). Also, goods-producing industries contracted 1.6 percent, namely construction (-8.9 percent), manufacturing (-0.9 percent) and mining (-4.2 percent).

Kyrgyzstan's economy contracted 5.3 percent year-on-year in January-June of 2020 compared to a 6.4 percent growth in the same period a year earlier, as the economy continued to be hit by the Covid-19 crisis. Services were the most affected (-8.2 percent), namely wholesale & retail trade (-15 percent), hotels & restaurants (-39.5 percent) and transportation activities (-32 percent). In addition, goods-producing industries also shrank (-1.3 percent), mostly construction (-9.1 percent) and manufacturing (-0.1 percent). In contrast, growth was recorded in mining (9.8 percent) and agriculture (1.6 percent).

Kyrgyzstan's economy contracted 4.8 percent year-on-year in January-May of 2020 compared to a 5.6 percent growth in the same period a year earlier, as lockdown measures to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic restrained the economy further. The main negative contributions came from retail trade (-13.8 percent); hotels & restaurants (-34.8 percent) and transportation services (-43.5 percent). On a more positive note, growth was recorded in mining (13 percent) and agriculture (1.3 percent).

Kyrgyzstan's economy shrank 3.8 percent year-on-year in January-April of 2020 compared to a 5.4 percent growth in the same period a year earlier. The main negative contributions came from wholesale & retail trade (-8 percent); construction (-5.6 percent) and industry (-2.8 percent). In contrast, the agricultural sector grew slightly (0.2 percent).
