The BLOM Lebanon PMI increased to 45.8 in September of 2018 from 45.6 in the previous month, pointing to the smallest contraction in private sector activity in three months. Both new orders and new export orders declined at a softer pace in September, mostly due to political uncertainty and instability. This in turn led to a drop in backlogs of work and, consequently, employment posted the biggest fall since June. Also, output slowed from the prior month and purchasing activity continued to decrease. On the price front, input cost inflation went up slightly, while output cost inflation decreased further due to solid competition between companies. Meanwhile, businesses are more pessimistic regarding output’ expectations in the year ahead.

Annual inflation rate in Lebanon decreased to 6.7 percent in August of 2018 from 7.6 percent in the previous month. It was the lowest inflation rate since May, as prices slowed for housing & utilities (8.6 percent from 9.3 percent in July), particularly water, electricity, gas & other fuels (14.6 percent from 17 percent). Additionally, cost went up at a softer pace for food & non-alcoholic beverages (5.6 percent from 6 percent); transport (11.4 percent from 12.9 percent); health (4.4 percent from 5.9 percent); clothing & footwear (10.8 percent from 14.6 percent); miscellaneous goods & services (2.3 percent from 2.5 percent); furniture & household equipment (1.9 percent from 2.9 percent) and restaurant & hotels (3.3 percent from 3.5 percent). Meanwhile, inflation was steady for education (4.1 percent, the same as in July); communication (1 percent) and recreation & culture (7.8 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.2 percent, after a 0.2 percent drop in July.
