Lebanon Inflation Rate at 3.17 percent  
Lebanon's consumer price inflation eased to an 18-month low of 3.17 percent year-on-year in January of 2019 from 3.98 percent in the previous month. Inflation slowed for: housing & utilities (2.83 pct vs 4.24 pct in December); clothing & footwear (7.45 pct vs 9.66 pct); household goods & furnishings (4.67 pct vs 5.03 pct); communication (0.03 percent vs 0.83 pct); and alcoholic beverages and tobacco (1.09 pct vs 1.43 pct). In addition, transport prices fell (-2.70 pct vs 1.14 pct). Meantime, prices rose faster for:food & non-alcoholic beverages (7.67 pct vs 6.18 pct); miscellaneous goods & services (2.42 pct vs 2.28 pct), and recreation & culture (5.52 pct vs 5.36 pct). On the other hand, inflation was steady for both health (at 2.51 pct) and education (at 5.40 pct). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went down 0.73 percent, after decreasing by 0.94 percent in December.

The BLOM Lebanon PMI ticked up to 46.5 in January of 2019 from 46.2 in the previous month. The reading pointed to a softer deterioration in the Lebanese private sector, though marking the sixty-seventh straight month of contraction. Output, new orders and export orders fell at a slower pace, but still sharply amid ongoing political and economic instability. Meantime, firms continued to shed jobs, extending the current sequence of employment contraction to nearly a year. Also, capacity pressures moderated further with a solid decrease in backlogs of work due to weak demand conditions. In terms of prices, input costs fell for the first time since July 2018 and the most since the series began. Finally, despite the degree of pessimism regarding year-ahead outlook softened to a 26-month low, firms continued to mention anticipation for further economic and political instability.
