Norway Inflation Rate at 2.50 percent  
Norway's annual inflation rate declined to a 12-month low of 2.5 percent in May 2019 from 2.9 percent in the previous month, missing market consensus of 2.9 percent. Prices rose at a softer pace for: transport (2.8 percent vs 4.6 percent in April); food & non-alcoholic beverages (1.0 percent vs 1.9 percent); furnishings, household equipment & routine maintenance (1.8 percent vs 2.4 percent); and miscellaneous goods & services (1.4 percent vs 1.5 percent). On the other hand, inflation accelerated for: housing & utilities (3.5 percent vs 3.0 percent); recreation & culture (4.2 percent vs 4.1 percent); and restaurants & hotels (3.1 percent vs 2.3 percent). The core inflation rate, which is adjusted for tax changes and excludes energy products, decreased to 2.3 percent in May from 2.6 percent in the prior month, also below consensus of 2.6 percent. On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell 0.3 prices and the core index decreased 0.2 percent.

Norway's annual producer inflation eased sharply to 0.4 percent in May 2019, the lowest figure since November 2016, from 2.6 percent in the previous month. Manufacturing inflation slowed to 2 percent from 4.1 percent in April, while prices of extraction and related services continued to decline (-5.1 percent vs -1.8 percent). Norway Household Consumption MoM at -1.20 percent  
Household consumption of goods in Norway declined by 1.2 percent month-over-month in April 2019, following an upwardly revised 2.2 percent gain in the previous month. This was the first monthly drop in household spending since December last year. There were falls in purchases of vehicles and petrol (-8.0 percent vs 6.9 percent in March) and spending on electricity and heating fuels (-2.8 percent vs 2.9 percent). At the same time, consumption growth slowed markedly for other goods (0.8 percent vs 1.8 percent), while spending on food, beverages and tobacco was little-changed (0.3 percent vs 0.2 percent).

Norway's retail trade increased by 1.6 percent year-on-year in April 2019, after an upwardly revised flat reading in a month earlier. Sales rebounded for both automotive fuel (0.1 percent vs -4 percent in March) and other goods (0.4 percent vs -1.4 percent). Also, retail trade not in stores, stalls and markets recovered sharply (5.6 percent vs -1.2 percent). In addition, sales of food, beverages and tobacco (1.6 percent vs 1.3 percent), those of non-specialised stores (2 percent vs 1 percent) and those of other household equipment (3.9 percent vs 1.4 percent) increased faster. At the same time, sales fell much less for cultural and recreation goods (-1.9 percent vs -5.4 percent). Meantime, sales of information & communication equipment plunged (-6.2 percent vs -0.5 percent).

Norway's consumer confidence dropped to 12.8 in the three months to June 2019 from an upwardly revised 13.3 in the previous period. This was the weakest figure since the second quarter 2017 when the reading was at 12.5, with consumers' willingness to make larger purchases softening markedly (12.5 vs 14.1 in Q1), following an increase in the Norwegian central bank's interest rates. Meanwhile, households' expectations towards the country's economy last year surged (16.2 vs 7.1) and those over the country's economy over the next 12 months strengthened (1.0 vs 0.3). At the same time, consumers' expectations regarding their own financial conditions next year (23.3 vs 19.9) and those of last year (19.5 vs 18.1) improved. The country's consumer confidence hit a 24-year low of -15.4 in the first quarter of 2016, due to a plunge in crude oil prices.

Norway GDP Growth Rate at -0.10 percent  
The Norwegian economy shrank unexpectedly by 0.1 percent on quarter in the first three months of 2019, reversing an upwardly revised 0.6 percent growth in the previous period and missing market expectations of a 0.6 percent expansion. This marked the first quarterly GDP contraction since the third quarter of 2016, due to declines in both fixed investment (-1.2 percent vs 2.3 percent), and petroleum activities and ocean transport (-2.9 percent, the same as in Q4), while net external demand contributed negatively to GDP. Imports rose 2.4 percent (vs 1.8 percent in Q4), faster than an increase of 2.2 percent in exports (vs -0.7 percent in Q4). Meantime, household consumption growth was unchanged (at 0.5 percent) and government spending advanced firmly (1 percent vs 0.2 percent). Mainland GDP, which excludes the largely petroleum-based offshore sector, expanded 0.3 percent in the first quarter, much slower than a 1.1 percent growth in Q4.
