Paraguay Cuts Interest Rate in Emergency Meeting
The central bank of Paraguay slashed its benchmark interest rate by 50 bps in an emergency meeting on March 23rd, joining peers across the world. The move follows a 25bps cut at its previous meeting, bringing borrowing costs to its lowest on record. Policymakers said that there is enough room for further monetary policy easing to help mitigate the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the domestic economy, without risking the annual inflation target of 4%. Paraguay Holds Interest Rate at 4%
The central bank of Paraguay left its key monetary policy interest rate steady at 4 percent on 24 February 2020, saying the current policy stance remains appropriate to reach the 4 percent inflation target. The central bank noticed that the coronavirus outbreak has become a new factor of incertainty. It also underscored that economic activity showed a favourable dynamism during the last months of 2019. On the price front, it mentioned that inflation remains in the bottom range of the central bank target and that the expectations is for it to gradually return to the long-term target.
