Additionally, construction output contracted (-0.23 percent from 0.9 percent).

The Central Reserve Bank of Peru kept the benchmark interest rate steady at 2.75 percent at its April 2019 meeting, as widely expected. Policymakers said that the decision is appropriate as inflation expectations remain anchored in an environment in which the economic activity is below its potential. The Committee noted that the annual inflation rate rose to 2.25 percent in March from 2 percent in February mainly driven by higher cost of education, and it is projected to remain within the target range and to be around 2 percent in the projected horizon. Policymakers added that there are still risks regarding global economic activity although less volatility has been observed in international financial markets.

Considering the first two months of the year, the trade surplus narrowed to USD 0.77 billion from USD 1.24 billion in the same period of 2017.

On the expenditure side, private consumption (3.8 percent vs 2.9 percent); government spending (3.3 percent vs 0.3 percent) and investment (5.3 percent vs 0.6 percent) increased at a faster pace. Also, exports went up 2.2 percent (vs 2.1 percent) and imports increased 0.9 percent (vs 1.1 percent). Considering full 2018, the GDP expanded 4 percent compared to a 2.5 percent growth in 2017.
