The inflation rate in Serbia picked up to 1.6 percent year-on-year in July 2019 from a 14-month low of 1.5 percent in the previous month, as prices rose faster for: food and non-alcoholic beverages (2.1 percent vs 1.5 percent); recreation & culture (2.5 percent vs 1.7 percent); communication (0.4 percent vs 0.1 percent); and miscellaneous goods and services (1.6 percent vs 1.4 percent). Meanwhile, inflation was unchanged for housing & utilities (at 1.8 percent), while it slowed for transport (0.5 percent vs 1.4 percent) and alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics (3.7 percent vs 5.2 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell 0.2 percent, the third consecutive month of decline.

Serbia Interest Rate at 2.50 percent  
The National Bank of Serbia lowered its key policy rate by 25bps to a record-low of 2.5 percent at its August 8th 2019 meeting, surprising markets who expected no changes. The move follows an unexpected 25bps cut in the previous meeting. In July, annual inflation rate fell to a fourteen-month low of 1.5 percent from 2.2. percent in June, the lower end of the central bank’s 1.5% to 4.5% target range. Over the next two years, policymakers expect inflation to continue to move within the target, most likely at the lower end.

The number of unemployed persons declined by 81.6 thousand, or 17.4 percent, to 387.1 thousand and the number of employed rose by 122.3 thousand, or 4.5 percent, to 2,810.5 thousand. Meantime, the labor force participation rate went up to 53.9 percent from 52.9 percent a year ago and employment rate advanced to 47.4 percent from 45.1 percent in Q1 2018. The youth unemployment rate (people age 15-24) also decreased to 14.7 percent from 17.2 percent in Q1 2018. In the fourth quarter of 2018, the jobless rate was higher at 12.9 percent.

The Serbian economy advanced 2.5 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2019, higher than a preliminary estimate of 2.3 percent but slowing from a 3.4 percent expansion in the previous period. It was the weakest growth rate since the last quarter of 2017, as government spending eased (2.5 percent from 3.3 percent) while household consumption increased at the same pace as in the last quarter of 2018 (3.2 percent). Meantime, gross fixed capital formation advanced 8.4 percent, accelerating from a 3.2 percent expansion in the last quarter of 2018. Net foreign demand contributed negatively to growth, as exports rose 9.3 percent (from 10.6 percent in Q4) while imports went up at a faster 9.4 percent (from 10.9 percent). On a quarterly basis, the GDP expanded 0.3 percent, after a 0.2 percent growth in the prior quarter.
