The increase on the month reflected a slight increase in gross borrowing to GBP 17.4 billion in July, below the pre-Covid February level of GBP 23.7 billion and consistent with the recent weakness in mortgage approvals.

Net mortgage borrowing by UK households was GBP 1.9 billion in June 2020, compared to the revised GBP 1.3 billion in May but weak compared to an average of GBP 4.1 billion in the six months to February. The increase on the month reflected both more new borrowing by households, and lower repayments. Gross new borrowing was GBP 15.8 billion in June, below the pre-Covid February level of GBP 23.4 billion.
