UK Mortgage Lending Remains Strong
Net mortgage borrowing by UK households was GBP 5.6 billion in December of 2020, slightly lower than the almost 4-year high of GBP 5.7 billion reached in November, and compared to market forecasts of GBP 5.591 billion. Net borrowing continued to be significantly higher than the average of £3.9 billion seen in the six months to February 2020. Strong borrowing since September has, however, only partially offset weakness earlier in the year as total borrowing in 2020 (GBP 43.3 billion) was below 2019 (GBP 48.1 billion).

UK Mortgage Lending Highest Since 2016
Net mortgage borrowing by UK households was GBP 5.7 billion in November 2020, higher than the revised GBP 4.5 billion in October and above market forecasts of GBP 4.35 billion. November borrowing was the highest since March 2016, and significantly higher than the average of GBP 3.9 billion seen in the six months to February 2020. Recent strength in net mortgage borrowing has, however, only partially offset weakness earlier in the year: total borrowing in the year to November (GBP 37.6 billion) was below the equivalent in 2019 (GBP 44.0 billion).

UK Mortgage Lending Below Forecasts
Net mortgage borrowing by UK households was GBP 4.3 billion in October 2020, lower than the revised GBP 4.9 billion in September and below market forecasts of GBP 4.5 billion. The continued strength in borrowing follows high levels of mortgage approvals for house purchase seen over recent months. Mortgage borrowing troughed at GBP 0.2 billion in April, but has since recovered and is slightly higher than the average of GBP 3.9 billion in the six months to February 2020.
