The IHS Markit Vietnam Manufacturing PMI dropped to 50.5 in September 2019, the lowest since February 2016, from 51.4 in a month earlier. New orders grew the least in three years, and overseas sales also slowed while there was a slight fall in output, the first since November 2017. In addition, buying levels slowed to near-stagnation; and staffing levels were reduced, ending a three-month sequence of job creation, mainly attributable to resignations. In terms of prices, input cost inflation remained muted, enabling manufacturers to offer price reductions to customers in order to stimulate demand. Looking ahead, sentiment deteriorated for the second straight month to the lowest since August last year amid concerns over market demand.

Retail sales in Vietnam increased by 12.7 percent year-on-year in September 2019, the most since December last year, after a 12.4 percent advance in the prior month. Sales growth accelerated for goods (13.9 percent vs 13.3 percent in August), tourism (9.7 percent vs 8.7 percent), and other services (9.6 percent vs 9.2 percent). Meanwhile, sales at accommodation and catering service grew less (8.6 percent vs 9.8 percent). Considering the first nine months of 2019, retail sales rose 11.6 percent compared to the corresponding period the prior year.

Vietnam GDP Annual Growth Rate at 7.31 percent  
Vietnam's gross domestic product expanded by 7.31 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2019, following a marginally revised 6.73 percent growth in the previous quarter. This was the strongest GDP growth rate since the fourth quarter last year, as output expanded faster for industry and construction (10.05 percent vs 9.14 percent in Q2) and services (7.11 percent vs 6.85 percent). Meanwhile, agriculture, forestry and fisheries advanced softer (1.53 percent vs 2.04 percent in Q2). For the first three quarters of 2019, the economy grew 6.98 percent. Vietnam targets an economic growth of between 6.6-6.8 percent this year.

Vietnam's industrial production rose by 10.2 percent year-on-year in September 2019, easing from a 10.5 percent gain in the previous month, amid a sharp decline in mining and quarrying (-6.6 percent vs 14.4 percent in August). Meanwhile, output growth accelerated for manufacturing (12.3 percent vs 10.3 percent), electricity supply and distribution (10.6 percent vs 10.3 percent), and water supply and waste treatment (8.9 percent vs 7.6 percent). Considering January to September, industrial output grew by 9.6 percent compared to the same period the prior year.

The annual inflation rate in Vietnam declined to 1.98 percent in September 2019 from 2.26 percent in the previous month. This was the lowest inflation rate since April 2016, as inflation slowed for housing and construction materials (2.72 percent vs 2.80 percent in August); textile, footwear, hat (1.82 percent vs 1.85 percent); and education (4.65 percent vs 6.60 percent); while transport costs fell faster (-2.65 percent vs -0.62 percent). On the other hand, food and catering services prices rose faster (1.81 percent vs 1.70 percent), while household appliances and goods inflation was steady (at 1.36 percent). Annual core inflation, which excludes volatile items, edged up to 1.96 percent in September from 1.95 percent in August. On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.32 percent.
