Vietnam Foreign Direct Investment at 4.12 USD Billion  
Foreign direct investment into Vietnam rose by 6.2 percent year-on-year to USD 4.12 billion in the first three months of 2019. In addition, FDI pledges for new projects, increased capital and stake acquisitions - which indicate the size of future FDI disbursements - surged 86.2 percent from a year earlier in the January-March period to USD 10.8 billion. The manufacturing and processing industry is set to receive the largest amount of investment (77.7 percent of total pledges), followed by real estate (7.2 percent) and professional activities, science and technology (3.5 percent). Hong Kong was the biggest source of FDI pledges in the first three months of 2019 (47 percent of total pledges), followed by Singapore (13.5 percent) and South Korea (12.2 percent).

Vietnam Manufacturing PMI at 51.90  
The Nikkei Vietnam Manufacturing PMI rose to 51.9 in March 2019 from a near three-year low of 51.2 in February. Output increased the most since November last year and new orders advanced for the fortieth consecutive month, driven by new export business. In addition, buying activity went up at the fastest pace so far this year. Meanwhile, the job creation rate dropped for the second straight month. On the price front, input cost inflation remained relatively weak, providing scope for firms to lower their output prices again. Looking ahead, sentiment was higher than in February and broadly in line with the series average, strong optimism reflected expected improvements in market demand and investment in expanding productive capacity.

The annual inflation rate in Vietnam increased to 2.70 percent in March 2019 from 2.64 percent in the previous month. This was the highest inflation rate since December last year, as prices rose faster for housing and construction materials (2.81 percent vs 1.72 percent in February). In addition, transport prices fell less than in a month earlier (-1.67 percent vs -4.54 percent). Meantime, inflation slowed for both grain food (0.24 percent vs 1.15 percent) and household appliances and goods (1.29 percent vs 1.35 percent) while garment, footwear, hat inflation was steady (at 1.67 percent). Annual core inflation, which excludes volatile items, edged up to 1.84 percent in March from 1.82 percent in February. On a monthly basis, consumer prices inched down 0.21 percent, following a 0.80 percent rise in February.

Vietnam's gross domestic product grew by 6.79 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2019, following a 7.31 percent expansion in the previous quarter. This was the weakest growth rate since the first quarter last year. The growth was driven by services sector (6.50 percent from 7.61 percent in Q4), industry and construction (8.63 percent from 8.65 percent), and agriculture, forestry and fisheries (2.68 percent from 3.90 percent). Vietnam targets an economic growth of between 6.6-6.8 percent this year.

Vietnam's industrial production increased by 9.1 percent in March 2019, easing from a 10.3 percent growth in the previous month. Output rose at a softer pace for both manufacturing (10.3 percent vs 12.8 percent in January); and electricity supply and distribution (9.8 percent vs 10.9 percent). Meantime, production growth accelerated for water supply and waste treatment (11 percent vs 7.2 percent). At the same time, mining and quarrying output rose 0.4 percent, reversing from a 5 percent drop in a month earlier. Considering the first three months of the year, industrial output grew by 9.2 percent compared to the same period a year earlier, slowing from a 12.7 percent gain in the corresponding period 2018.
