The NBS Composite PMI Output Index in China dropped to a five-month low of 49.0 in October 2022 from 50.9 in the prior month, indicating a general slowdown in the production and operating activities of Chinese enterprises due to COVID-19 infections and curbs in several cities. Factory activity unexpectedly contracted, with the index hitting its lowest since July; while the services sector dropped for the first time in four months. “In October, affected by the multiple spread of the pandemic and other factors within the economy, China’s PMI fell," said senior NBS statistician Zhao Qinghe. Zhao added that the foundation of China’s economic recovery needs to be further consolidated.
