In France, Business Climate measures industrial entrepreneurs’ sentiment about current business situation and expectation about business conditions. The survey sample comprises about 4,000 enterprises in the manufacturing and mining industries. The indicator is calculated using factor analysis technique. The index is then calculated in a way to measure the current sentiment in relation to the historic index values of the period 1993-2011. A value over 110 indicates unusually high optimism and a value under 90 indicates unusually high pessimism. The value 100 indicates neutrality.

French Business Morale Stronger than Forecast
The manufacturing climate indicator in France rose marginally to 103 in October of 2022 from a 1-1/2-year low of 102 in the prior month, above market expectations of 101. The latest reading marked the first improvement in the index after three consecutive months of decreases. Manufacturers’ opinions on their past (7 vs 5 in September) and expected production (13 vs 8) were more positive although the general prospects of production in the industry have slightly deteriorated (-8 vs -6). At the same time, the balances of opinion on the overall (-11 vs -13) and foreign order books (-8 vs -12) have bounced back after three consecutive months of decrease. Moreover, the projected workforce size over the coming months increased slightly compared with the previous month (15 vs 14). Lastly, the indicator of perceived economic uncertainty remained high and well above its long-run average (37 vs 38).

The manufacturing climate indicator in France fell for a third month to 102 in September of 2022 from a downwardly revised 103 in August, in line with market forecasts. It was the lowest reading since March last year, mainly due to decreases in the balances of opinion on the expected general production (-6 vs -2 in August) and the overall order books (-13 vs -10), as well as foreign orders (-12 vs -8). In addition, perceived economic uncertainty has spread (36 vs 30).
