Italian Retail Sales Edge Down in February
Retail sales in Italy fell by 0.1% from a month earlier in February of 2023, easing slightly from the eight-month-high increase of 1.7% in the previous month. Food sales fell by 0.3% in the period following the 2.2% jump in January. In the meantime, non-food sales edged 0.1% higher to extend the 1.4% increase in the prior month. On a yearly basis, retail sales in Italy rose by 5.8%, easing from the downwardly revised 6% advance in January.

Italian Retail Sales Rise the Most in 8 Months
Retail sales in Italy jumped by 1.7% from a month earlier in January of 2023, rebounding from the 0.2% drop in the earlier month and sharply beating market expectations of another 0.2% decline. It was the fastest increase in retail sales since May 2020, as food sales jumped by 2.2% from the previous period to extend the muted 0.1% increase in January. Meanwhile, non-food sales rose by 1.4% to rebound from the 0.2% retreat in the previous month. On a yearly basis, retail sales jumped by 6.2%, picking up from the 3.6% increase in January.
